2008 Scion xD measures up

Cox News Service

Sunday, April 20, 2008

There's a simple way to tell if a vehicle is aimed at the youth market: Check how easy it is to find the iPod jack.

The Scion xD's sound system comes standard with a 160-watt, six-speaker Pioneer audio system that includes an easy-to-find iPod connection and a mini-jack port under the air and temperature controls. Unlike some vehicles that just play songs from a secondary device, the Scion xD displays the track, artist and album information from the iPod, too.

There are other features that speak to a younger driver, such as the ability to upload pictures, video clips and movies from Pioneer's Web site – or a home computer – to display on the audio system's head unit.

It's design features like this that practically yell to the younger buyer, "Take me for a test drive."

The Scion is the youth brand for Toyota, something the vehicle's price point backs up. The base cost is $15,350, and that delivers digital displays, remote keyless entry and other features normally found in more expensive vehicles.

Despite how blunt the back of this hatchback looks, it offers a surprising amount of cargo space. Behind the rear seats there's more than enough room for groceries with at least 10.5 cubic feet of space. In addition, the rear seats can slide forward and back.

And if even more space is needed, the rear seats can fold down to provide a total of 35.7 cubic feet of space.

The Scion is powered by a 1.8 liter, four-cylinder engine that generates 128 horsepower. It comes with either a five-speed manual transmission or four-speed automatic.

This five-seater can get 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway, and that's with automatic transmission.

The engineers went out of their way to make this hatchback look good and perform well on the road, details that drivers of any age will appreciate.
