Oprah’s big news

No more Oprah?! Can it be??

Oprah Winfrey spoke to viewers about her reasons for ending The Oprah Winfrey Show at a live taping Friday.

“After much prayer and months of careful thought, I have decided that next season, season 25, will be the last season of The Oprah Winfrey Show,” the daytime queen said. “Over the next couple of days, you may hear a lot of speculation in the press about why I am making this decision now…and that will mostly be conjecture.

“So why walk away and make next season the last? Here is the real reason: I love this show,” Winfrey said. “This show has been my life. And I love it enough to know when it’s time to say good-bye. Twenty-five years feels right in my bones, and it feels right in my spirit. It’s the perfect number — the exact right time. So I hope that you will take this 18-month ride with me right through to the final show.”

Many women, including myself, are fans of this daytime diva. What are your thoughts on her departure?

Green projects

I’m currently working on the 2010 Charm Calendar! For the upcoming year, we’ve decided to put a “green”er spin on things by spotlighting area women who make inventive, eco-friendly crafts! Whether they’re reusing an old pair of jeans as a tote bag or constructing a bird feeder from old plates, there are some fun ways to make the most out of our once-unwanted materials.

Do you have any easy green projects you could share with us? Let us know!

Have a great day, and look for your Charm Calendars in late November. :)

Charm Night Out

What a great turnout last night at our Third Annual Charm Night Out Event! More than 1400 ladies (and a few men) of East Texas came out to Maude Cobb Convention and Activity Center to shop, share and connect with each other!

There was something there for everyone, from delicious foods on Restaurant Row to great fashions during our two fashion shows featuring Hurwitz and That Girl’s Boutique. This event was a great way for all of us to get together and have some fun while raising money for an amazing local non-profit, Tiger Creek Wildlife Refuge in Tyler!

We’d love to hear what you thought about the event. Share your thoughts here on what you enjoyed or what you’d do differently so that next year we can come together and have just as much fun, if not more! We want to hear from you!!

Healthy eating

Now that the weekend is over and we’ve satisfied our junk food cravings with nachos, funnel cakes and corn dogs @ AlleyFest, it’s time to start eating healthy again!

I decided to cook brussels sprouts last night to kick-start my healthy eating habits. After all, brussels sprouts are very high in fiber, and they belong to the disease-fighting cabbage family. They’re also particularly rich in vitamin C, an anti-cancer agent — they’re just a good-for-the-body food that is high in protein and low in fat and calories.

Unfortunately, a couple of bites into the veggie, and I realized brussels sprouts aren’t for me! I try to like them … I just make myself enjoy them. I forced myself to eat them just because of the healthy goodness they provide.

Do you force yourself to eat healthful foods you don’t like? If so, what are they and why?

Charm Asks: What’s your all-time favorite movie quote?

Charm asked our readers, “What’s your all-time favorite movie quote?” Here’s what they said:

“My favorite’s from ‘Man of the Year’ with Robin Williams: ‘Politicians are a lot like diapers. They should be changed frequently, and for the same reasons.’ ” Ellen Hankins, Diana

“‘Mawwiage. Mawwiage is what bwings us togevuh … today. Mawwiage, that bwessed awwangement, that dweam within a dweam. Then wuv, twue wuv, will fowwow you fowevuh. So tweasure your wuv.’ The Impressive Clergyman from ‘The Princess Bride’ said this. My husband, who is a minister, once used this quote at a wedding rehearsal to help everyone relax. The bride and groom begged him to include it in the ceremony, and he did.” Gwen Carl, Longview

“I think the best movie quote is from ‘Forrest Gump,’ when he states, ‘Life is like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.’” Kashanna Porter, Longview

“My all-time favorite movie quote is from the 1989 movie, ‘Steel Magnolias.’ Olympia Dukakis’ character Clairee said, ‘If you don’t have anything nice to say about anyone, come sit next to me.’ I love that!” Tracey Dye, Longview

“My favorite quote is from ‘Steel Magnolias.’ Shelby says, ‘I’d rather have thirty minutes of wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special.’” Vicki Spearman, Longview

New East Texans

I’ve lived in Longview all of my life, and it’s refreshing to me when I meet people that are new to the area. Yesterday I met a couple of girls who moved to Longview a few months ago. When I told them a bit of my history, they immediately started asking questions like, “Where are the best restaurants?” and “What do you do for fun?” and “Why don’t you have an accent?” :)

Their main question was: “What are some cool towns or cities to visit that are close-by?”

See, their mission is to explore as much of their new surroundings as possible. They started in Jefferson in October and visited The Tyler Rose Garden after that.

East Texas is literally covered in little “diamond in the rough” spots. Where would you suggest sending these adventure-seeking road trippers?

Getting healthy, staying fit

A friend and I were talking recently about diet and exercise, and she pointed me in the direction of a great Web site she swears by: www.sparkpeople.com.

SparkPeople is a networking site that allows you to create a personal fitness and nutrition regimen that you follow in order to reach your weight-loss or fitness goals. Whether it’s calorie counting or goal setting, I’ve found it very helpful!

If you’re interested, check it out. It’s a helpful tool!

Oscar night

Last night, Hollywood took center stage at the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Topping off the night as Best Picture with eight Oscar wins was feel-good flick “Slumdog Millionaire.” Other big winners include Sean Penn and Kate Winslet, who took the top acting honors for their respective roles in “Milk” and “The Reader,” along with a posthumous win for Heath Ledger in “The Dark Knight.”

What did you think about the wins (and losses) on Oscar night? Who got snubbed, and which winners do you think deserved the coveted golden statue?

What your color says …

While surfing the Internet, I came across an article detailing what your favorite color says about you. It was a fun little read, and it goes something like this:

If you’re favorite color is …

Red If a person loves red color, it means he or she is an outgoing person. A person is not only impulsive but is prone to abrupt mood swings too. Such a person has lot of companions or fellow human beings and can be easily persuaded. Though a person have an optimistic approach in life, he or she doesn’t hesitate to grumble or complain. The spontaneous nature of red color lovers is assertive and they can freely voice their opinions. They have strong sex drive and are likely to end up having extra-marital affairs, unless the strong sense of duty restrains them from indulging into wild fantasies.

Orange All those people who love orange color are basically good natured and loyal. They are sociable but at the same time swayed by opinion of other people, generous soul sincere at heart. The gestures of such people are friendly and are inspired by goodwill.

Blue People whose favorite color is blue are introspective and purposeful by nature. They hold conservative beliefs and under stressful conditions prefer to withdraw into gentle surroundings. They seem to have lot of control over passions and desires, but are sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. Not to mention, they have loyal and sober friends.

Green Preference for the color green shows that a person is a dutiful citizen. Such a person is not only aware about his or her surroundings but also sensitive to social customs and bears a good name in the community. They are emotionally attached to their family. Green color depicts self love.

Which one are you, and is this accurate?

Beginner gardener

I have a confession to make. I’m a wanna-be gardener.

Luckily for me, my friend recently got her hands on some plants and now she has quite an impressive jungle growing on her back patio.

She suggested I come over and get some clippings to start my very own collection of happy little plants! I got some little pots and some potting soil (let me tell you, once I got my hands on my very own potting soil, I felt like a full-fledged gardener) and went over to her house.

Now at my house I have a baby Wandering Jew, Elephant Ear, Aloe Vera and Moses in a Basket/Boat plant.

Those are easy plants to care for, my friend tells me. Now that I’ve had them for awhile, I’d like to try my hand at other plants/flowers.

Any suggestions? Does anyone have any gardening tips you would like to share? It would be greatly appreciated!

Empty nest

Today I was talking to a woman about Empty Nest Syndrome. She brought up the fact that many women have a hard time dealing with all their chicks flying away.

Does anyone have any helpful advice for ways to cope with this life-changing event?
