Gregg County commissioners eye tax cut
Gregg County commissioners will consider decreasing the tax rate by a quarter of a cent at their Sept. 8 meeting.
After Monday’s commissioners meeting, County Judge Bill Stoudt said he plans to propose a tax rate decrease from 27 cents per $100 property valuation to 26.75 cents per $100 property valuation.
The Commissioners Court met to hold the second public hearing on the tax rate, which had been advertised as potentially remaining the same. The first public hearing was Thursday. No one addressed the court during either public hearing.
Even with the proposed decrease, property owners probably will pay more in county taxes because of higher appraisal values. A homeowner whose residence had a taxable value of $100,000 in 2007 paid $270 in taxes. If that same residence increased in taxable value to $105,000 in 2008, the homeowner would pay about $281 with the proposed tax rate.
