Winds decreasing across East Texas: 8:14 p.m.
The 8 p.m. observations from the National Weather Service show winds dying down a bit across the region.
Whatever it is that reports Longview’s hourly observations is still out of commission, but there continues to be a rising barometric pressure reading (29.40) with Ike exiting to the north. Tyler was experiencing heavy rain and gusts to 25 mph. Mount Pleasant and Sulphur Springs had gusts of 29 and 31 mph, respectively.
The highest gust of any East Texas town reporting was Texarkana at 40 mph, a far cry from the likely 60-plus mph gusts that blew through Longview, Henderson, and Carthage earlier in the day. The highest gust reported on an hourly observation was 58 mph in Henderson, but considering the Shreveport forecast office had 65-mph gusts in the cards much of the afternoon for Longview and Henderson, it’s pretty safe to bet winds reached that intensity in certain areas across Gregg, Rusk, and Panola counties.
Witnesses have also said much of Marshall appears to be without power.
Shreveport and Barksdale Air Force Base are still reporting rain and gusts from 46 to 48 mph. Two large tornado watch boxes cover much of Arkansas and Louisiana.
