Residents still find magic in man-made ‘oasis’
Cindy Still was 9 years old when Lake Cherokee opened.
It’s been a part of her life ever since her dad built the first house there in 1949.
Wednesday night, Still and about 100 other lake residents met at the Cherokee Water Co. to celebrate the 60th birthday of the lake’s spillway being constructed. She remembered water skiing and surfing at Lake Cherokee during her younger years as her son directed the party.
What are you favorite memories of Lake Cherokee?

Ms. Dessie, did you previously work as a secretary for the Tatum Housing Authority or something like that back in the early 1990s? I believe I remember you from when I lived at that complex. My mom’s name is Kathy Geter, and I believe you worked for Ruby Tatum Tanner.

My husband and I owned NF59 when my children were growing up. We enjoyed the lake on the weekends. We repapered the house and painted. Sold later and continued enjoying other week-ends at Lake O Pines where we also own property there. We enjoyed the out-doors recreation with our children.

I remember when I was a student at Kilgore’s Eastview elementary school and Mr. Kyle Bates was the principal. Once a year, he would invite the members of the PTA and their families to come to Lake Cherokee for a dinner. Mr. Bates would then take the children riding in his boat. That was quite a thrill because most of us in the 50’s could not afford such luxurious things. Mr. Bates is in his 90’s now and I’m in my mid-60’s. Good and fond memories.
