Study: Area roads more dangerous than rest of state
Drivers in East Texas are almost two times as likely to be injured or killed in a motor vehicle crash than drivers across the entire state.
According to information from the Texas Department of State Health Services, almost 34 drivers per 100,000 in the East Texas region were injured or killed in wrecks in 2003, the latest data the department has. Statewide, the rate was 18 per 100,000.
The Texas Department of State Health Services and a consortium of concerned groups kicked off a campaign called Pay Attention East Texas. The group, including Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Allstate Insurance and the East Texas Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, plans to tackle the problem through a four-part public education effort.
Pay Attention East Texas hopes to reach drivers via billboard messages, store front signs and window decals.
