Senior meal program running out of money
KILGORE — High demand has caused the first substantial shortfall for the East Texas Council of Governments’ Senior Nutrition Program, although the council had more available money for the program than in previous years.
The council has allocated about $1.9 million to four subcontracting food agencies for the 2009 fiscal year, officials said. Three agencies received about $1.8 million and served about 370,000 meals to eligible seniors in 14 East Texas counties in the 2008 fiscal year.
Although the program’s state funding increased, agency requests surpassed the available funds by nearly $230,000.
The council has experienced minor shortfalls in previous years, but this is a first for such a large shortage of funds, council spokeswoman Lindsay Vanderbilt said.
What can be done to ensure seniors are fed?
