Longview ISD board passes new TAKS, GPA policies
The rules for calculating grade-point averages are changing in the Longview Independent School District. So are the requirements for donning a cap and gown and walking across the stage on graduation day.
School trustees on Monday night approved a policy change that allows students who have not passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills to participate in graduation activities if the students sign a contract agreeing to certain requirements, including attending tutorials. Diplomas will not be awarded to students until they pass the TAKS.
Trustees also approved some changes to how GPA is calculated. The primary alteration is that honors courses and Global High core courses will now be weighted, in that the top grade-point average will be worth more than 4.0. The school district’s International Baccalaureate program — which goes into effect next school year — also will have weighted classes comparable to advanced placement and pre-advanced placement classes.
Do you think students who have not passed the TAKS be able to participate in graduation activities?
