Charles new district court judge
Alfonso Charles wanted to become a district judge, but he said he would have preferred waiting a decade rather than taking a job left vacant after the death of a close friend.
Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday appointed Charles to serve as 124th District judge. Bill Jennings, who was 124th District judge for less than a year, died Oct. 17 of a heart attack.
“Since I became a judge, I always thought I would like a district court bench,” Charles said Tuesday.
“(But) I always thought that this would be 10 years down the road when (Jennings) decided he didn’t want to do it anymore.”
County court-at-law judges can hear many, but not all, of the cases that a district judge can preside over.
Charles, a 44-year-old Republican who has served as Gregg County Court-at-Law No. 2 judge since 2003, has tentatively scheduled his swearing-in ceremony for Dec. 4 at the Gregg County Courthouse. Judge David Brabham of the 188th District Court will administer the oath of office, Charles said.

Once again another district judge who previously worked in the DAs office. Way to go Rick Perry lets make sure that all the judges in this county remain loyal to the local prosecutors office. Hey I have an idea instead of calling them Hon. Judge Brabham and Charles why dont we call them what they are Assistant District Attorneys after all that is what they are!! If anyone does not beleive this then just go to court one day and watch what happens. Shame all on the Judges here your nothing but yes men for the local DA.
