Expected sleet could ice bridges, overpasses

Some East Texans might have noticed sleet overnight and Jack Frost nipping at their noses this morning, but the real concern is driving over bridges and overpasses, National Weather Service officials said.

There was a 90 percent chance of rain and sleet overnight, but temperatures were expected to remain high enough that the roads wouldn’t freeze, said Lara Keys with the National Weather Service.

“The ground will be too warm, but people should still be careful on the bridges and overpasses because they can ice over before other areas,” she said.

The rain and sleet is caused by a polar air mass that’s moving through the area, Keys said. Light rain is expeccted throughout today, but should clear up by evening, she said.

On Tuesday, the National Weather Service issued a hazardous weather outlook for East Texas, including Gregg, Rusk, Upshur and Harrison counties. A mixture of light sleet and snow was expected north of Clarkesville City, but any sleet and snow that falls should melt upon impact because surface temperatures are in the lower 40s, according to the National Weather Service.

How are you handling the cold weather?

…I think it’s awesome! Wear an extra layer of clothing and a nice warm scarf around the neck will do the trick as well when you are out and about.
