Slick Rick’s NFL Picks - Super Bowl

Slick Rick’s NFL Picks - Super Bowl

Sunday’s Game

Indianapolis 41, New Orleans 23 (Dwight Freeney’s injury hasn’t changed my opinion. Peyton Manning’s experience and the Saints’ shaky defense equal a Colts victory, although I think the Saints may still be in the hunt by the fourth quarter.)

Conference Championship Round Results

Rick 2-0 1.000 (I got lucky with New Orleans. The Saints didn’t win that game. The VIkings lost it.

UIL Realignment

The Longview Lobos, after making back-to-back trips to the state championship game in Class 4A, will return to Class 5A for at least then next two seasons.

Longview, which fell to Lake Travis in the Class 4A Division I state title game in 2008 and 2009, was moved into District 11-5A on Monday with the University Interscholastic League’s biennial realignment. The Lobos will play in a district with Tyler Lee, DeSoto, Mesquite, Mesquite Horn and North Mesquite. The Lobos were 13-3 in 2008 and 14-2 in 2009.

Noticably missing from the 5A district is John Tyler. The Lions dropped to Class 4A, and will compete in District 14-4A along with Pine Tree, Hallsville, Kilgore, Jacksonville, Marshall, Whitehouse and Nacogdoches.

Henderson also dropped in classification on Monday, moving to Class 3A where the Lions will compete in 16-3A along with Spring Hill, Carthage, Gilmer, Gladewater and Pittsburg. Gilmer won the Class 3A Division I title and Carthage is a back-to-back champion in Class 3A Division II.

The only other drop in classification locally involved Tatum, which moved to Class 2A to complete in District 9-2A Division I with White Oak, Jefferson, Sabine, New Diana and Harmony.

Other local districts of note include:

District 8-2A Division I — Daingerfield, Hooks, New Boston, Prairiland, Queen City and Redwater
District 7-2A Division II — Rivercrest, Como-Pickton, Cooper, Dekalb, Paul Pewitt and Paris Chisum
District 8-2A Division II — Elysian Fields, Harleton, Hughes Springs, Linden-Kildare, Ore City and Waskom
District 9-2A Division II — Arp, Frankston, Union Grove, Joaquin, West Rusk and Winona
District 9-A Division I — Big Sandy, Hawkins, Maud, Overton, Carlisle and James Bowie
District 12-A Division II — Beckville, Union Hill, Mount Enterprise and Tenaha

Several teams nailed down — at least tentatively — schedules for 2010. Longview will open the 2010 season with arch-rival Marshall, and for the second year in a row the Lobos will feature a Class 5A state champion on their non-district slate.

Longview’s five-game non-district schedule will include a zero week opener against Marshall, followed by John Tyler, Allen, Lufkin and Abilene.

Abilene won the 2009 Class 5A Division II state title, finishing with a 15-0 record after knocking off Katy, 28-17, in the championship game.

Longview opened the 2009 season against 5A state champion Allen. Schedules are tentative until contracts are signed. Locations will be announced later.

Pine Tree, Gilmer and Carthage have also tentatively set their non-district schedules. Pine Tree will have an open date on Zero week, followed by games against Henderson, Liberty-Eylau and North Lamar.

Gilmer will open with Atlanta on Zero week, followed by Tatum, Jacksonville, Liberty-Eylau and Daingerfield.

Carthage will face Jacksonville, Lindale, Chapel Hill, Nacogdoches and Center in non-district play.

“Stump” named Mr. Texas Football

Gilmer QB Darian “Stump” Godfrey was named the 2009 Mr. Texas Football by Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine with the release of the publication’s winter edition.

Godfrey, who led Gilmer to a 15-0 run to the Class 3A Division I state championship, was named QB of the All-Texas High School Team. Other East Texas selections were Arp safety LaVocheya Cooper, Van defensive lineman Jacoby Alexander, and Cayuga’s Malcome Kennedy, who was listed as a utility player.

The final Texas Football magazine top 25 polls included Longview at No. 3 in 4A, Gilmer at No. 1 in 3A, Carthage at No. 2 in 3A, Daingerfield No. 1 in 2A, Arp at No. 8 in 2A, and Cayuga at No. 1 in 1A.

‘Pursuit of excellence’ leads coach to 900 wins

There will be high school basketball games all across America tonight. Fans will clap their hands, stomp their feet and cheer for their hometown players.

At the end of the night, teams will win and teams will lose.

But there’s a story behind the wins and the losses.

For Tommy Aldridge, a Lady Lobos’ victory tonight against Hallsville would mark 900 wins for his career. Only 10 coaches have more career wins than Aldridge, according to the National High School Sports Record Book. Aldridge said he believes it’s the first time a high school girls basketball program would reach 900 victories with a single coach.

“We hope we get it,” Aldridge said. “If we get it, we’re going to earn it. We’re going up against an undefeated team. It’s going to be a battle.”

What do you think of Aldridge’s record?

McGwire comes clean…Now what?

Mark McGwire used steroids.

In perhaps the most obvious admission of the past 20 years by a professional athlete, the former Oakland and St. Louis slugger admitted on Monday he used steroids for much of his career — including the 1998 season when he broke baseball’s single season home run record.

Now what?

Baseball fans I’ve talked to over the years have stated that all McGwire needs to do is come clean. Just admit he transformed himself from a skinny, 6-5 slugger that likely would have hit 25-30 bombs per season had he not juiced into a hulked-up version we all remember smacking baseballs out of the park at an alarming rate by using steroids.

Admit it, they said, and we’ll forgive and move on.

On Monday, McGwire admitted it. He didn’t do it so he could hit more home runs, he said, only so his body would heal faster when he suffered injuries.

Whatever.

The home runs captivated us all, and be honest here. We all knew, but did we really care? Did we really care that McGwire’s body was a giant test tube…bulking up where folks could see it but fragile in places we couldn’t?

I didn’t.

Just being honest. Chicks aren’t the only ones that dig the long ball, and I wasn’t the only one standing around the television set and cheering when McGwire hit No. 62 back in 1998 to set the record.

Then, when he sat and refused to talk about the past — a past we now know included steroids — we all got angry. We wanted to strip him of the home runs we cheered for and keep him out of the Hall of Fame (which isn’t exactly a collection of choir boys by the way).

All the while, baseball fans said they simply wanted McGwire to admit what he had done. Admit it, and we’ll forgive. Not sure it will get you into the Hall of Fame, but won’t we all feel better if he just admits what he did so we all KNOW what we already know?

Not sure about you, but I don’t feel better.

McGwire admitted it on Monday. He was a juicer. We already knew that, but for some reason I felt sick to my stomach when I read the reports.

Part of that sick feeling stems from the fact I’ll never truly be able to forgive McGwire or any of the players who admit to using steroids. They stained the game I love.

Part of that sick feeling is because I’m a hypocrite. I wanted home runs. I wanted them in bunches, and I wanted them to leave the park in such a way you feared for the family of four sitting in the left field bleachers when McGwire came to the plate.

I got them. I knew how I was getting them, and I just didn’t care.

Now I care, but is it too late? Mark McGwire is probably asking himself the same thing today.

Slick Rick’s NFL Picks - Wild Card Round

Saturday’s Games

Cincinnati d. N.Y. Jets (Cedric Benson didn’t play last week. He will make a huge difference this week)

Dallas d. Philadelphia (The Eagles will better, but the Cowboys are on a roll, especially on defense. Cowboys win 30-17)

Sunday’s Games

Green Bay d. Arizona (Kurt Warner won’t save the Cardinals this year)

New England d. Baltimore (The most difficult of wild-card games to pick. New England is a different team at home, but this game could swing the way of the Ravens easy)

Week 17 Results

Rick 11-5 .688 (Proud of picking Dallas over Philadelphia, not proud of misses with Buffalo, Green Bay, Kansas City and especially the Texans.)

Overall Results

Rick 175-81 .684 (You are right Ryan. Picking Denver only led to tears this year. Because of the Broncos, I can’t finish the season picking 70 percent right. Darn you, Kyle Orton!)

BCS NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Thursday

I look for a great football game between two great programs.

Many believe Alabama’s time has come to win another national championship and feel the Crimson Tide will steamroll Texas tonight in fulfilling its quest — completing an unbeaten season with it’s 14th win, a Heisman Trophy winner (running back Mark Ingram) and another national championship for the school.

Alabama has a great coach in Nick Saban and a stable of tremendous athletes obviously to go through SEC play unbeaten and then beat Florida like they did (32-13) in the SEC championship game.

On the other hand, offensively Colt McCoy, along with his offensive line and receiving corps, as well as the Texas running game enter with motivation of their own — definitely with things to prove.

Texas has won both high-scoring and low-scoring, close games, as well as tough, physical contests.

Look for Colt to bounce back from the Heisman snub in December with poise and a performance worthy of the winningest college quarterback ever and the Texas defense (under Will Muschamp) will rise to the formidable task at hand … in a close game.

Texas d. Alabama

Last week’s picks: 8-5; Total bowl game picks: 16-12 — .571 For the season: 137-56 — .709

House panel passes college football playoff bill

WASHINGTON (AP) — A House subcommittee approved legislation Wednesday aimed at forcing college football to switch to a playoff system to determine its national champion, over the objections of some lawmakers who said Congress has meatier targets to tackle.

The bill, which faces steep odds, would ban the promotion of a postseason NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision game as a national championship unless it results from a playoff. The measure passed by voice vote in a House Energy and Commerce Committee subcommittee, with one audible “no,” from Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga.

“With all due respect, I really think we have more important things to spend our time on,” Barrow said before the vote, although he stressed he didn’t like the current Bowl Championship Series, either.

The BCS selections announced last weekend pit two unbeaten teams, No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Texas, in the Jan. 7 national title game. Three other undefeated teams — TCU, Cincinnati and Boise State — will play in a BCS bowl game, but not for the championship.

“What can we say — it’s December and the BCS is in chaos again,” said the bill’s sponsor, Rep. Joe Barton of Texas, the top Republican on the House Energy and Commerce Committee. He said the BCS system is unfair and won’t change unless prompted by Congress.

The legislation, which goes to the full committee, would make it illegal to promote a national championship game “or make a similar representation,” unless it results from a playoff.

Do you think college football should go to a playoff system?

If Longview beats Denton Guyer, return trip to Waco awaits

If Longview’s football team defeats Denton Guyer in a Class 4A Division I state semifinal on Saturday in Dallas, the Lobos would return to Floyd Casey Stadium in Waco to play the state championship game. According to Longview coach John King, the championship game will begin at 6 p.m. on Dec. 19.

Longview played in the 2008 Class 4A Division I state championship at Floyd Casey Stadium, dropping a 48-23 decision to Lake Travis. Lake Travis and Pearland Dawson play in the other state semifinal on Saturday in College Station.

King said both Lake Travis and Dawson have agreed to play at Floyd Casey Stadium if Longview wins. King said he did not know where the state-championship game would be if Guyer defeats Longview.
