Berry reinstated as Longview football team’s associated head coach
John Berry has been reinstated as the Longview High School football team’s associate head coach and co-defensive coordinator, 3 1/2 weeks after he was removed from that position in the aftermath of an on-field incident.
Longview ISD director of extracurricular activities Pat Collins and head football coach John King each confirmed the reinstatement on Friday. King declined to comment further.
“Glad to have him back,” Collins said of Berry, declining further comment.
Collins also declined comment on the coaching assignments of Casey Pearce, Johnny Hamilton and Billy Bell, all of which had their workload altered when Berry was reassigned previously. Pearce was promoted to full-time defensive coordinator after previously sharing co-defensive coordinator duties with Berry. Hamilton, an athletic coordinator under Collins, was named linebackers coach. Bell, a strength and conditioning coach, received additional game-day duties.
Berry was reassigned on Oct. 5 after he threw his headset and left the Lobo Stadium field following an argument with King during the third quarter of Longview’s game against Sulphur Springs on Oct. 2.
Berry, who also teaches science classes, was also reassigned to work at the Dade Center, the Longview ISD’s alternative learning center, on Oct. 5, but was reinstated to his previous teaching position later that week.
Longview’s football team concluded its 2009 regular season with a 56-7 win over Pine Tree on Thursday. The Lobos are 9-1, ranked No. 3 in the Associated Press Class 4A state poll and finished District 13-4A play with a 6-0 record, its sixth consecutive undefeated season in district play. Longview will play a Class 4A Division I bi-district playoff in approximately two weeks with the opponent, time, date and site to be determined.

World Series pick
2009 World Series
Philadelphia Phillies vs. New York Yankees
Two weaknesses come to mind for the Phillies. First, can Brad Lidge hold up against Mariano Rivera? I don’t know how Lidge has gone through the playoffs basically untouched so far, because he has allowed some hard-hit balls.
Second, the Phillies are putting a lot of their hopes on Pedro Martinez, who has been practically a nothing pitcher the last two years, and has a mediocre history playing in New York.
Despite what Jimmy Rollins says, I don’t have faith in the Phillies, and with a sick feeling in my stomach, I pick …
Yankees in 6.
If you are a fan of Texas Rangers and are disgusted with the thought of Alex “Fake Good Guy” Rodriguez and Mark Teixiera celebrating a World Series title, I feel your pain. GO PHILLIES!!
