How many times must it be said?
Free throws matter.
Just ask Memphis’ men and LSU’s women.
Memphis lost Monday’s national championship because it missed 3 of 4 freebies in the final half minute to complete the self-destruction of a nine-point lead in the final minutes of regulation. Kansas dominated in OT.
LSU’s women made 7 of 19, if you can comprehend that, in Sunday’s Final Four loss to Tennessee.
You’d figure high-major Division I scholarship athletes could make a few free throws. After everybody harped on Memphis’ 59 percent free-throw shooting all season, the Tigers might try to work on that during the tournament. The percentage increased to 70 percent in the five tourney games entering tonight’s championship, but Memphis dipped back down closer to where it usually is with a 12-for-19 performance.
It wasn’t too pleasing to watch Memphis’ less-than-courageous overtime “comeback” attempt. It was almost like once KU got the lead, Memphis thought, “Well, it’s been a good season …”
