Talkin’ to Teaff
I talked with former Baylor head football coach and current Director of the American Football Coaches Association Grant Teaff earlier for a Sunday story about recruiting and the possibility of an early signing period for football.
I grew up in a family with some Baylor connections, so I always thought Teaff a semi-legend considering his 21 years at Baylor yielded a 10-11 record against Texas and plenty of upsets and bowl bids.
I was raised on Teaff’s quote, “You gotta keep your worms warm.” For those of you who don’t know, he fired up his Baylor team for a game against Texas one year by telling a story about two friends fishing. One was catching everything, while the other couldn’t catch anything. The unsuccessful fisherman asked how his friend was catching everything, and at that point, Teaff pulled a live earthworm from his mouth and said, “You gotta keep your worms warm.”
Classic. Baylor went out and upset the Longhorns.
I talked to Teaff for about 15 minutes, and he talked for 14 of them. He was very kind and helpful, and seemed a genuinely nice guy over the phone.
Be sure to check out Sunday’s sports for the story on recruiting and early signing-period issues with quotes from Teaff, Longview head football coach John King, and Tatum head football coach Andy Evans.
