Idle Thoughts
The News-Journal’s online sports poll for this past week asked who is the best athlete to ever suit up at Longview High School, and the choices included male and female athletes from football (Bobby Taylor and Fred Talley), basketball (David Wesley, Teresa Jones, Kristina Taylor and Angela Lawson), baseball (Chris Davis) and softball (Casey Clifton). Taylor was the overwhelming pick of the readers with 121 total votes. Wesley was second with 35.
If someone forced me to pick a top 10 list from the East Texas athletes I have been blessed to cover over the past 20-plus years, I’d have to go with…in no particular order…Davis and Bobby Taylor of Longview, Rodney Thomas of Groveton, Chad Alexander of Lufkin, Stephen Hodge of Tatum, Kevin Daniel, Christy Shipley and Amber McCray of Pine Tree, E.D. Jackson of Kilgore and David Warren of John Tyler.
