Idle Thoughts
Football season never really ends in Texas.
A week ago, the sports staffs of the Longview News-Journal and Tyler Morning-Telegraph gathered in Longview to select the first preseason East Texas Dream Team. The team will include players from the coverage areas of both newspapers — an area that extends north to Interstate 30, west to Trinidad, south to Lufkin and east to Waskom.
The elite team, which includes preseason Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year along with a Dream Team offense (one quarterback, three running backs, two receivers, five offensive linemen), Dream Team defense (four linemen, three linebackers and four defensive backs), a punter, kicker and utility player, will be released by both newspapers on Aug. 2.
I feel confident the team includes the best East Texas has to offer. I also know it is bound to spark some heated conversation among football fans when the team is released.
