Defensive Lineman U just gets stronger
The Times-Picayune of New Orleans reported almost an hour ago that Mansfield, La., defensive tackle Chris Davenport has committed to LSU.
Davenport is a manchild. The 6-4, 320-pound force is a five-star recruit per Rivals.com and one of the top two players in the entire state of Louisiana. Davenport is LSU’s 16th commitment of the 2009 class. Rivals.com ranks Davenport as the nation’s No. 4 defensive tackle, the best athlete at the defensive tackle position, and the country’s No. 18 recruit overall.
Players such as Jarvis Green, Anthony “Booger” McFarland, Chad Lavalais, Claude Wroten, Marcus Spears, and Glenn Dorsey have given LSU a strong reputation for producing NFL-caliber defensive linemen during the past decade. LSU’s D-line haul could get greater if Lufkin’s Jamarkus McFarland, the No. 2 player in the country, chooses the Tigers over Texas and Oklahoma.
Davenport had 120 tackles, 20 sacks, and 18 more tackles for loss in 2007. He was recruited by virtually everyone in the country, holding offers from Michigan, Minnesota, Ole Miss, USC, Tennessee, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Alabama, Boston College, Florida, and Florida State.
Mansfield, which is in DeSoto Parish (borders Panola and Shelby Counties) is a Class 3A school in the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, and is not very far from East Texas. If you want to see Davenport play this season, just travel southeast on Texas 149 to Carthage, then turn due south on US 59. At Tenaha, take US 84 east and you’ll arrive in Mansfield about a half hour later.
