Best area games of Week Zero

Need a football fix a day early? Don’t want to stay home and watch the college games Thursday night? Maybe you don’t want to drive to Allen to watch the Lobos on Friday. Here’s a list to use to schedule your East Texas high school football weekend.

Top 5 Thursday/Friday Games

1.Carthage vs. Kilgore, 7:30 p.m., Friday, R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, Kilgore - Bulldogs vs. Bulldogs in the renewal of an old Class 4A district rivalry. Carthage’s spread meets Kilgore’s cloud-o-dust offense.

2.Henderson vs. Navasota, 7 p.m., Thursday, Abe Martin Stadium, Lufkin - Telvin Fryman, last year’s 12-4A rushing leader, collides with the Rattlers’ Dexter Pratt, an LSU commit. Henderson LB Daniel Prior should have plenty of opportunities to greet Mr. Pratt.

3.Gilmer vs. Jasper, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Rose Stadium, Tyler - Athletes should be all over the field in this matchup, which is a rematch of the 2004 3A D-II state title game … a 49-47 Gilmer win.

4.Joaquin vs. White Oak, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Roughneck Stadium, White Oak - The Class A Rams are replacing two 2,000-yard rushers, and White Oak’s playing its first game back in the 2A ranks. The Roughnecks could be a surprise team this season.

5.Arp at Paul Pewitt, 7:30 p.m., Friday, Brahmas Stadium, Omaha - RB Lavocheya Cooper and DE Richard Bradley lead an athletic Arp squad against Pewitt’s slot-T throwback rushing attack.

Saturday’s Best Game: Elysian Fields vs. Troup, 6 p.m., Jack V. Murphy-Bear Stadium, Gladewater

Troup escapes the old 19-2A, arguably 2A’s best district the past two years, then gets the Jackets to open the season. EF brings back DE Kyle Kriegel, RB Joe Benefield, and LB Tyler Busby, but not much else from last year’s state finalist.
