What was Tennessee thinking?
Tennessee just lost 27-24 in overtime at UCLA, marking the second time in two seasons the Volunteers have opened the season with a West Coast loss.
Let me get one thing straight: I’ve never agreed with the people who have called for Phil Fulmer’s ouster for the past several years. I figure the second-winningest coach in Tennessee history deserves some leeway.
But if you’re one of those people looking for evidence to ditch Fulmer, Monday night’s game is prime material.
UCLA threw four first-half interceptions and rushed for 29 yards on 31 carries. Tennessee rushed for 177 yards on 34 carries. So tell me this: Why did Vol QB Jonathan Crompton throw the ball 42 times?
The only thing I can think is that first-year offensive coordinator Dave Clawson was trying to show off. Bad idea, Dave.
Whatever the case, Tennessee’s refusal to play ball control against a third-string Pac-10 quarterback who played JUCO ball in 2007 cost them a win. Have fun defending against Tim Tebow, Matthew Stafford, and John Parker Wilson this season, Vols.
