Friday’s top high school games
5.Hallsville (2-1) at Henderson (0-3) - Henderson’s had some tough luck in its losses to Navasota and Mount Pleasant, games the Lions dropped by a combined three points. Hallsville has shown a pretty good defense and a strong running game with A.J. Jones. This matchup of old district foes could either be a springboard for Hallsville into 13-4A play, or a psychological lift for Henderson. I’m sure the Lions would love to get a win before starting 14-4A play.
4.Carthage (1-1) at Nacogdoches (2-0) - Neither of these teams played last week because of Hurricane Ike’s impending landfall on the Texas Coast. Carthage’s game against Atlanta was rescheduled for Oct. 3 in Carthage, and the Dragons had their game against Lufkin canceled. This US 59 battle should be fun as Bulldog RB Dwight Smith goes up against Nac LB Bennie Perkins.
3.Pleasant Grove (3-0) at Gladewater (3-0) - Pleasant Grove’s preseason rankings in multiple polls prepared fans for a quick start, and the Hawks haven’t disappointed. Gladewater, however, has perhaps surprisingly enjoyed a 3-0 start of its own. The Bears’ Cardarian Lewis and Corey Davis will face PG defenders Tyler Brolo and Hayden Rybiski. Brolo has 39 tackles and seven sacks in only three games.
2.Gilmer (3-0) at Kilgore (2-1) - A 3A-4A clash of two of the most successful East Texas teams in recent seasons, Gilmer/Kilgore should be a fun one. The Buckeyes’ shotgun spread goes up against Kilgore’s I-formation running game. Gilmer averaged 66.5 points in its first two games before fighting past Liberty-Eylau 28-14 last week. Kilgore beat Carthage and Hallsville by 13 apiece before losing 28-18 at Marshall a week ago.
1.Lufkin (2-0) at Longview (2-1) - The old rivalry is renewed at Lobo Stadium. Longview’s rushing game has led its offense so far, but the Lobos will have to run against Lufkin’s Jamarkus McFarland, the nation’s top defensive tackle prospect according to Rivals.com. McFarland’s the country’s No. 3 overall prospect per the Web site, and he’s choosing between LSU, Texas, and Oklahoma.

east texas high school football is such a joke! it’s like these kids have only been playing 4-6 years, at the most. and the coaching is so lacking it’s ridiculous! i bet most of these coaches couldn’t even begin to run a successful D1 college program. much less a mediocre professional program. what a joke!

Why has nothing been said about Orlando Humble from White Oak who scored 6 TOUCHDOWNS last Friday? In fact he broke the school record
