All-East Texas Softball
The Longview News-Journal’s 2009 All-East Texas Softball Team will be released on Sunday, along with the Texas Sports Writers Association 2009 All-State Softball Teams.
The All-East Texas team will include the coach of the year, overall MVP, pitcher of the year, offensive MVP, newcomer of the year and a first team, second team and honorable mention list.
The team is selected by the News-Journal’s sports staff based on nominations from coaches, various all-district and all-state lists and our observations throughout the season.
In more than two decades as a sports writer, I’ve never been involved with an All-State or All-East Texas team that didn’t generate a certain amount of controversy, and I expect the 2009 versions will do the same. I welcome questions about teams, but let me go ahead and clear up a couple of things up front to save us all some trouble.
If you call to tell me about a player we left off the team, be prepared to tell me which player we selected DIDN’T deserve to be on the team. With so many good teams in our coverage area, it was a brutal process to trim the list down to the best of the best and I am sure some deserving players were not selected.
That said, I can say without hesitation that every player we did select deserved the honor.
Speaking of our coverage area, the biggest complaint we seem to get with the release of an All-East Texas Team usually involves the schools that are not represented.
The Longview News-Journal’s All-East Texas Team consists of players from our coverage area (where we sell newspapers). That includes the following schools:
Longview, Pine Tree, Spring Hill, Hallsville, White Oak, Kilgore, Marshall, Mount Pleasant, Gilmer, Henderson, Daingerfield, Pittsburg, Gladewater, Tatum, Carthage, New Diana, Paul Pewitt, Jefferson, Harmony, Ore City, Hughes Springs, Sabine, Linden-Kildare, Union Grove, Elysian Fields, West Rusk, Harleton, Overton, Big Sandy, Hawkins, Carlisle, Waskom, Beckville, Tenaha, Union Hill and Leverett’s Chapel.
Give me a call (903-237-7760) or shoot me an e-mail (jstallard@longview-news.com) if you have any questions, and look for the All-ET Baseball Team on Sunday, July 5.
