Elysian Fields 4, Woden 2
WHITEHOUSE — The Elysian Fields High School softball team erupted for four runs in the top of the fourth inning to capture a 4-2 decision over Woden in the first game of a Class 2A Region III regional quarterfinal doubleheader Friday night at Whitehouse High School. Woden won the nightcap, 4-3, forcing a third and deciding game at 2 p.m. today in Whitehouse.
Josi Soape led off by hitting a single over the head of the Lady Eagle shortstop with Lauren Parker and Rosie Lawrence following Soape with singles to load the bases with no outs.
Following a Jordan Simmons fielder's choice ground out, Candice Wise laced a single into left to drive in the first Elysian Fields run of the game.
Cheryl Boyette then stepped up and smacked a double into the gap in left center, driving in a pair of runs for the Lady Jackets.
Blair Hickey then stepped up to the dish and helped her own cause with a two-base rap to center that brought Boyette in to score.
The frame concluded on a Danie'l Goss ground out to short.
Woden (16-5), District 24-2A champions, drew first blood by plating their only two runs of the game in the bottom of the third as April Arriola started things off with a double to right followed by three of the next four Lady Eagles stroking out singles.
Hickey collected the complete game victory, surrendering two runs, one earned, on eight hits while fanning five and walking one.
Lawrence led the Lady Jackets at the plate (2-for-3) with Goss accounting for the additional Lady Jacket hit, a single in the first segment.
The winner of the best-of-3 series faces the winner of the Harleton and New Boston series next weekend.
