Spring Hill's Jordan finishes second at state in 3A shot put

Saturday, May 10, 2008

AUSTIN — Leslie Jordan added more silver to her state track and field collection Friday.

Jordan finished second in the Class 3A shot put at the UIL State Track and Field Championships at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas. The Spring Hill senior rebounded from a sixth-place showing in the discus earlier in the day.

Spring Hill High School's Leslie Jordan throws the discus at the Class 3A UIL Track and Field Championships in Austin on Friday. Jordan was sixth in the discus and second in the shot put.

The second-place finish was the best Jordan has placed in the shot put, after finishing third in 2006 and 2007. Jordan ends her high-school career with four state-meet medals, finishing second in the discus in 2007. Jordan was a four-time state qualifier in the discus and shot put.

''It's kind of bittersweet because I qualified four years and I wanted to win a gold,'' Jordan said. ''But to come here and have this experience is a blessing. I wanted to come back after this morning too.''

Jordan's best throw in the discus was her third, which went 129 feet, 8 inches. It was 7 feet, 8 inches shorter than her runner-up finish at the Class 3A Region II Meet in Commerce two weeks ago.

Jordan's fourth and sixth throws would have put her in contention for a medal, but she was called for fouls on the attempts. Jordan said her sixth throw was around 135 feet, which would have placed her second. Sharae Robinson of Corpus Christi West Oso won with her first throw of 137-7.

Jordan said she thought she fouled of her fourth attempt, but she questioned the call of her sixth and final attempt.

''Three judges said I didn't, one said I did,'' Jordan said. ''I don't think I did but I don't see myself when I'm spinning.''

Jordan appeared to have trouble with her release of her good throws, throwing them too high. Jordan said there wasn't one particular flaw in her discus throws.

''Discus is so technical. I just didn't do it,'' she said.

Getting a medal was never in doubt in the shot put, as Jordan was one of only two competitors to throw over 40 feet. Her fifth throw of 41 feet, 4 inches was her best.

Jordan was defeated by Crandall's Emily Atkins, who won the state title with a throw of 43 feet, 1/4 inch on her fifth attempt. Atkins had two other throws 42 feet or better. Jordan had a throw 43-4 to win the Class 3A Region II title two weeks ago, while Atkins' best then was 42-11.

Jordan has not committed to a college, but is considering offers from Northwestern State, Tarleton State and Kansas State.
