AUSTIN — Union Grove's Kristen Richardson came in fourth in the Class 2A girls discus Saturday, while Daingerfield's Brooke Carpenter was eighth. Richardson's best throw was 120 feet, 1 inch, while Carpenter's best was 110-8. Carpenter won the Class 2A Region III Meet in Palestine two weeks before with a throw of 114-5, while Richardson was second (114-1).
Tuscola Jim Ned's Shelby Easterling won with a best of 123-8. Richardson finished fourth in the discus in 2007.
Harmony's Jenny Degoede placed fourth in the Class 2A girls 400 meters, while Ashleigh Simmons of Hawkins was seventh. Degoede was edged by Trinity's Shambrail Woods for third place. Woods had a time of 58.10 seconds to 58.23 for Degoede.
Simmons had a time of 59.79 seconds. Degoede had a time of 58.88 seconds a the Class 2A Region III Meet two weeks ago in Palestine, while Simmons had a time of 59.25 seconds. Simmons finished third in the 400 meters in 2007, while Degoede placed fourth.
Universal City Randolph's Jayla McArthur won the state title in 56.95 seconds. McArthur helped Randolph win the Class 2A girls team title.
Arp's Randi Wymer finished sixth in the Class 2A girls 1,600 meters. Wymer had a time of 5 minutes 38.46 seconds after a time state-qualifying time of 5:37.27 two weeks ago. Stratford's Kristen Crabtree won the state title in 5:23.79.
Kaitlen Crowson of Hughes Springs finished eighth in the Class 2A girls 800 meters. Crowson had a time of 2 minutes, 31.56 seconds, after a state-qualifying time of 2:27.95. Brock's Payton Shoush won the state title in 2:18.73.
Paul Pewitt's Chynna Herron came in eighth in the Class 2A girls 300-meter hurdles. Herron had a time of 48.13 seconds, after a state-qualifying time of 47.00. Merkel's Carly Szabo won the state title in 44.73 seconds. Szabo also won the 100-meter hurdles state title.
The team picture for the Class A girls team champions was a lonely one. Bonnie Richardson is the team for the Central Texas school.
Richardson scored 42 points by herself to give Rochelle the team title. Richardson won state titles in the high jump and the 200 meters. She also second in the long jump and the 100 meters, as well as placing third in the discus.
Chilton and Seymour, which qualified two relay teams each, finished tied for second with 36 points each.
FRIDAY'S NOTABLES
Wymer disregarded her times of Friday and focused on placing. This strategy got her a medal.
Wymer finished third in the Class 2A girls 3,200 meters in 12 minutes, 2.81 seconds. Running in fourth place for the majority of the race, Wymer used a strong finishing kick to catch Haleigh Pustka of Wallis Brazos in the last 20 meters for the bronze medal. Wymer had the seventh best qualifying time (12:07.51).
'I was focusing on splits. I only improved by five seconds over regionals anyway,' Wymer said. 'It feels good to show people what I can do at the end.'
Hamilton's Amber Weems won the state title in 11:46.31, followed by Courtney Haass of Geronimo Navarro (11:50.01).
Wymer, a Stephen F. Austin State signee for athletics and academics, with compete in the 1,600 meters at 2:45 p.m. today.
'My goal for the mile is the same as the two-mile. Get a medal,' Wymer said.
Mount Pleasant Chapel Hill's Cassi Clower finished fifth in the Class 2A girls long jump. Her best attempt was her fifth, which went 17 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Jasmine Kent of Universal City Randolph won the state title with a leap of 18-11 1/4.
Overton's Megan Cook finished sixth in the Class A girls pole vault with a best height of 9 feet, 6 inches. Kelsey Wilson of Rocksprings won with a height of 11 feet.
Big Sandy's Jazz Montgomery finished fourth in the Class 2A girls triple jump Friday. Her best was 36-21/4. After a state qualifying mark of 38-3. Karnes City's Brittany Kinney won the state title with a leap of 37-101/4.
