Charm Challenge: Infrared Sauna

Monday, February 26, 2007

Vanessa Palmer of White Oak, 46, enjoys staying busy, but every once in awhile she likes to unwind after a long day. She visited a local salon to try out their infrared sauna. Here's what Vanessa has to say:

Vanessa Palmer read a book and listened to some tunes while she tried out an infrared sauna.

"The idea of an infrared sauna appealed to me. Traditional saunas heat the air with steam at extremely high temperatures. It's hard to feel relaxed when it's too hot — sometimes it's just exhausting.

I'd heard that infrared saunas operate at cooler temperatures; instead of steam they use UV rays, like the sun, that heat the body directly for a deeper, more therapeutic feeling. Another thing that sparked my interest was that a person can burn up to 600 calories in just 30 minutes! I had to see for myself.

My first visit to the salon was during my lunch hour at work. As soon as I arrived, the salon offered me a terry cloth wrap, which is the only thing you're supposed to have on during the treatment. I'm a modest girl, and so I brought my own towel from home to wrap around me. After I got a bottle of water and some reading material, I stepped inside the sauna.

Within minutes, the sauna's warmth wrapped around me and I felt my pores really start to open. Sweating is a great for detoxification and weight loss, and it was nice to get these benefits without the tiring heat of a traditional sauna.

I sat in the sauna for 30 minutes, but not once did I feel overly exhausted or weak in the 102 degree room. I stepped out after my treatment feeling refreshed and relaxed, and my skin was glowing!

I plan on going back the recommended three days a week for the best results. I can't tell if I'm losing the weight just yet, but I know every time I leave that salon I feel like a new woman. I've been very satisfied with the infrared sauna, and I would urge anyone to find one and make an appointment!"
