Dry skin lingers for awhile even after winter has whisked through East Texas. The low humidity of the air causes skin to lose its moisture and become dry, cracked and sometimes irritated, which doesn't leave you feeling fabulous. Judy Kennemer, of Merle Norman in Longview, and Carli Ballard, of Allure Medica in Tyler, suggested ways to help you avoid this cold-weather concern.

Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize
Drier times call for desperate measures. Find an intense moisturizer to apply to your skin while your body is still damp from showering. Look for a moisturizer that will provide a protective barrier against environmental elements that age the skin.
Exfoliate
Exfoliation enhances the job of any moisturizer by minimizing the dead skin cell build-up on your body. This allows your new cells to absorb moisture more readily. It's important to exfoliate two to three times a week in order for your fresh new skin to shine.
Rethink bathing habits
Water retention is key and, unfortunately, long, hot baths and showers rob your skin of its natural moisture. Try bathing every other day, if you can stand it, and opt for warm to lukewarm water.
Drink up
Water is essential for your body, and that's not just a winter thing. It's a natural hydrator and it keeps your body cleansed of toxins, resulting in a healthier look. Nurture your skin from the inside out by drinking plenty water (about 64 oz. per day) ... no matter the season.
Take your vitamins
Go to your medicine cabinet and pull out your vitamins, specifically your C and E. Vitamin C strengthens capillaries that feed blood to the skin, giving you a more youthful glow. Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant that helps protect your skin against impurities in the environment.
Dry scalp?
Just because you can't see your skin under your hair doesn't mean it's not affected by dry weather, also. If the winter months have left your scalp a little dry, try a shampoo and conditioner with aloe for a good moisturizing treatment on your hair and skin.
When your head is moisturized again and the flakes disappear, go back to products designed for your hair type. Switch between the products if the condition returns.
