Dress in denim: Finding a pair that flatters you

Wednesday, March 07, 2007

Owning the perfect pair of jeans can be an absolute dream. Unfortunately, finding a pair that flatters your physique can be a nightmare. Shopping for these wardrobe must-haves is a chore ... with so many different styles and brands, how do you know where to start?

Simple! Before carrying your weight in denim to the dressing room, think about your body. Charm dropped by Hurwitz and Trendy Chicks, both of Longview, to get ideas on which styles would work with the four standard body shapes.

Joe's Jeans: Muse $172 at Hurwitz
Hourglass (curvy, ideal)
First of all, congratulations. Most designer jeans are made with this body shape in mind. But if you're having trouble finding the right pair, look for jeans that give a smooth fit at the waist and hips. Try jeans that give you a classic, sophisticated look. Boot-cut is best.

Avoid: Baggy jeans (they won't show off your figure)!

Pear (wide hips, bootylicious)
Snag a pair of jeans that molds your hips and lifts your rear end. Try to find a fitted leg with a slight flare, which will support the curves no matter where they are! Low-rise jeans will help your torso look longer.

Avoid: Light washes on the back pockets; pleats (widen the look of hips and thighs).

Rectangle (straight, no curves)
You want to create curves, so look for flare cut jeans with embellishments on or around the back pockets. The flared legs will help your legs look shapely, while the embellishments will give your seat a little lift and draw attention to your hips.

Avoid: Straight cuts (make you look longer and straighter); baggy jeans.

Apple (rounded in tummy, no waist)
Try mid-rise jeans in a dark color that contour your frame. Find jeans that fit your waist but are slightly relaxed in the hip and thigh areas without adding bulk.

Avoid: High waists (may add bulk to your front); baggy jeans.

Fuller through the thighs
Straight fit, relaxed fit or trouser styles work best for girls with thicker thighs. These jeans will provide you with room in the hips and thighs without feeling restricting on your body.

Avoid: Any tapering at the bottom (that emphasizes your thighs).

Petite (small figure, short)
If you have a short figure, find jeans that have a shorter inseam and a higher knee break to create a long-legs look. Pair these denims with a cute pair of heels to appear even taller than you are.

Avoid: Capri pants or cuffed jeans (only make you look shorter).
