Fake it, don't bake it

Wednesday, April 30, 2008

One of summer's greatest joys is exchanging long pants and jackets for short-sleeve tanks and cute new skirts, but for some of us it's important to star working on our tops before we can feel comfortable in our new wardrobe. Fortunately, there are ways to get a subtle bronze glow without exposing ourselves to the sun's nasty ultraviolet rays!

It's easy - all you need is a new self-tanner to get your bod summer-ready. Self-tanners are best used within six months of purchase, so if you've got a few sitting on your bathroom shelf from last summer it's time to toss them and get new ones.

Charm stopped by Longview's Merle Norman, Lancome at Dillard's and Jack's Natural Foods to see what they had in store for us.

LUXIVA AHA Body Scrub
This cleansing formula polishes skin, refines lines and smoothes and softens rough, dry patches with 3% Alpha Hydroxy Fruit Acids. The exfoliating action leaves skin feeling soft, clean, refreshed and invigorated.

Before you apply your self tanner:

1 Exfoliate Exfoliate Exfoliate

Use an exfoliating scrub before self tanning. Don't overscrub! Pay extra attention to your knees, ankles, feet, elbows and neck. This will help achieve a uniform appearance since self-tanners grab on to dry skin surface areas. Completely dry off before applying.

2 Shower off

You want clean skin before you use your self-tanner. Any perspiration tends to make application streaky.

3 Moisturize

Apply a thin layer of lightweight moisturizer over the areas where you will be applying your self-tanner. This will help the self-tanner go on smoothly without clinging to dry patches. A little extra moisturizer over ankles, knees and elbows can prevent those areas from looking patchy.
