Mothers & Daughters: Favorite talents

Wednesday, June 27, 2007

Charm asked our mothers and daughters, "What talents does your mother/daughter possess that you would like to develop?" Here's what they said:

Kalli VanMeter Conway, 40, with her daughter Paige VanMeter, 12

Melissa Vance, 41, with her daughter Harmony Figueroa, 13

KALLI VANMETER CONWAY AND PAIGE VANMETER OF KILGORE

Kalli, 40: "There are several traits my daughter Paige possesses that I would love to have and develop in myself. She is very kind, loving, nurturing and caring, but the trait that I admire most is her willingness to forgive others. In a world filled with so much unkindness and cruelty, I have witnessed her forgiving heart in many situations. She inspires me to want to be a better person and be more forgiving. In Matthew 6:14, the Lord says, 'For if you forgive men when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.' Paige models the forgiving heart that we all should strive to have.

In my eyes, Paige has been blessed with many talents that I would love to have myself. She tumbles, dances and plays the violin; however, her biggest gift is in her writing. She has a story-telling ability that makes her writing come to life. Her style is much like her personality in that it can jump out and grab you, touch your heart and then make you laugh. She is very expressive and I learn from her every time I read something she has composed."

Paige, 12: "My mother is extremely talented at spreading the Lord's word, and that is definitely something that I would like to do more of. She is also a very dedicated person. When she wants something, she sets her mind to it and always succeeds.

Most people don't know that my mom is also an amazing seamstress. Over the years, she has made my sister and me costumes, crafts and quilts. I got a sewing machine for Christmas and I hope to learn to be as creative as she is."

MELISSA VANCE AND HARMONY FIGUEROA OF ELDERVILLE

Melissa, 41: "I would like to possess the outgoing, friendly attitude my daughter has. Harmony's confidence in everything she does has won her many awards. I would also like to posses my daughter's smile — even when she's a little on the downside she'll smile at me to let me know everything is OK. My daughter also is very talented in singing and dancing. I'm so proud that's she's my daughter!"

Harmony, 13: "My mom has a lot of talents that I would like to posses, and she is very strong and independent in many things. She takes care of her three kids by herself, and two of them (my older brothers) are even in college so it's sometimes hard. She works hard, but she still tries to find time for her family. She's a giver — if you need her she will be there no matter how tired she may be. I'm an Eaglette at Tatum and I have a lot of friends and family who want to come to my shows. If they need a ride to or from the event, she will gladly help them out!

She's also an amazing cook. I love her chicken spaghetti! Also, when I was little she would pick me up and dance with me ... she's a great dancer, and I'm working to be just as good as she is."
