Tame your bangs

Wednesday, August 29, 2007

Growing out your bangs can be quite a headache. However, if you're willing to be creative and experiment a bit, you may end up having fun with the process.

Diana resident Blair Smith, 17, gets her hair styled at Rendezvous Salon & Spa.

Charm got some tips from stylists local salons on how to make your bangs look their best.

Time to trim

"Some people make the mistake of just not getting their hair cut when they are trying to grow out their bangs," said Jesse Robertson, a stylist at Rumours Spalon in Longview.

It's important to remember to get your hair cut every six weeks or so in order to keep your hair healthy and split-end-free.

"If your hair isn't in shape, that's likely to add to the frustrations of growing your bangs out in the first place," Jesse said.

Blow and go

"Try blowing your hair in the direction you'd like it to go," said Maria Vu, owner of Rendezvous Salon & Spa. "If your hair's natural part is hard to work with, fight it by blow drying your hair in the direction you'd like it to part."

Experiment with different parts to control the growing hair. Start with a middle part and clip your hair back on either side, or play with side parts to see which look is best for you.

Accessorize

"Little clips and barrettes are great to use when growing out your hair," Jesse said. "They can really give your hair some personality and dress you up."

Try out cute headbands, preferably the kind with teeth that allow you to pull back those rebellious strands that just won't stay in place.

Play with products

"Hair products are a must when growing out your hair," Maria said. "Most of them give your hair volume, which gives you more control over the direction your hair takes."

Try various pastes, gels and waxes to help you smooth your bangs out of your eyes. Start with a small amount of the styling product and experiment.

Remember, patience is a virtue. Have fun with your ever-changing hairstyle while you're growing your bangs to the length you love.
