While it's not always convenient to schedule a day at a local salon, there's no reason you can't pamper yourself from the comfort of your own home. Joyce Donnell at Diva Salon ad Becky Leighton at Pepper Tree Park in Longview shared some tips on how to give your feet a professional pedicure. Just light some candles, pop in a CD with soothing tunes and get ready to spoil yourself!
The steps
1. Remove
Strip any old color off your toenails with a cotton ball soaked in acetone polish remover.
2. Soak
Add Epsom Salt to warm water and soak your feet for about 10 minutes in a large bowl.
3. Buff
Dry your feet with a clean towel, then exfoliate your feet and heels with a pumice stone (which can be purchased at area drug stores). Make sure to get the heel, ball of your foot and your big toe – never rub the tops of your feet. Thoroughly rinse the stone after each use, let it dry and keep it in a plastic bag.
4. Exfoliate
Remove dry skin from your legs and feet with a homemade mixture of olive oil and salt or raw sugar. Rub in an upward motion for two to three minutes. Then, rinse them in your large bowl of warm water.
5. Trim
Cut your nails with toenail clippers and file them to the length you want. Be careful not to cut the corners of your toenails. Cut straight across and file the corners slightly. This helps prevent ingrown toenails.
6. Moisturize
Massage your feet and legs with a rich cream.
7. Soften
Apply cuticle oil to your nails to soften and revitalize rough areas.
8. Push
Use a cuticle stick to press your cuticles back so they don't get in the way of your polish.
9. Polish
Apply a base coat first, then apply two thin coats of polish. Finish with a top coat if you haven't used one yet.
