Finding porefection

Wednesday, December 05, 2007

Most women dream of having a perfect complexion. As we walk to the mirror in the morning, we hope to see rosy cheeks, soft skin and no pore in sight. But mirrors don't lie. Whether they're large, small or practically invisible, pores are a fact of life.

Fortunately, there are some ways to minimize their appearance, so you can rest easy as you keep your pores out of sight and out of mind!

The lowdown on pores

Pores play a huge role in your skin's overall makeup. They are small passages for oil to reach the surface of the skin. The oil then forms a layer over the skin that prevents the loss of moisture, helps to keep the skin soft and prevents environmental damage, among other things.

Pores begin to get larger when they get clogged with a mixture of oil, dead skin cells and dirt from the environment. Once clogged, the pores appear darker, which make them way more obvious.

The challenge comes when a person tries to balance the amount of oil produced and the actual needs of her skin.

Pore reduction

Here are some simple ways you can reduce the appearance of pesky pores:

* Skin care products that increase levels of collagen and elastin are good to use because they help prevent the pores from stretching. Look for ingredients such as Vitamin C and retinol in your skin care products.

* Astringents that aren't too harsh on your skin can help minimize your pores. Toners and astringents can also remove excess surface oils, resulting in a tighter, firmer look for your complexion.

* Exfoliating cleansers and facial scrubs will polish off dry, dead skin that's clogging your pores. Use them gently and not too often, though. If you use them too much your body will produce more oil in an attempt to replace it. Once a day is just fine.

Makeup tips

Avoid applying foundation to any areas where pores are enlarged. Heavy foundations will draw attention to your large pores. If you must use them, stay with a sheer, light and oil-free foundation.

Use a blotting powder and apply it directly to any areas with larger pores. It will minimize the look of pores and give your face a more matted, smooth surface.

Avoid using moisturizer on the oily areas, as the skin produces enough moisture on its own.
