Mothers & Kids: Halloween costumes?

Wednesday, August 27, 2008

Charm asked our mothers and kids, "What Halloween costume can you make using only materials found around the house?" Here's what they said:

Ada Stafford's Sweet Scarecrow.

Makenzie Swift's Pink Poodle.

C.C. AND ADA STAFFORD OF LONGVIEW

Sweet Scarecrow

things you'll need:

1 pair of overalls

1 old plaid shirt

1 hot glue gun

1 eyeliner pencil

1 hat

handful of patches (we used an old scrub top)

plenty of yellow yarn

"Ada and I chose to make a scarecrow costume because, not only am I creatively challenged, but also Ada loves my gardening hat!

First, find some overalls you don't mind ruining for the project. Start by gluing the yellow yarn to the feet, the sides and the pockets of the overalls. Then, get an old plaid shirt and glue yarn around the sleeves. As you let the glue dry, take an eyeliner pencil and paint your child's face to look more like a scarecrow — pencil around the smile and the eyes. Next, get your patches and glue them onto your child's overalls liberally. Next, put on her plaid shirt and slide on her newly patched overalls.

After that, we topped off Ada's costume with my straw gardening hat that she loves and voila — a pretty little scarecrow for Halloween."

KASI AND MAKENZIE SWIFT OF WHITE OAK

Pink Poodle

things you'll need:

1 4 oz. bottle of fast grab tacky glue

1 compact of pink blush

1 long sleeve pink leotard

1 pair of pink leggings

1 pair of cotton shorts

1 pink cotton sports bra

1 chenille stick

1 9x12" piece of pink felt

1 24x6" piece of pink tulle

2 bags of cotton balls

2 white or pink fluffy ponytail holders

"My mom and I started throwing around ideas for costumes, and this was by far the cutest of our ideas. When we asked Makenzie, she was sold as soon as she heard the word 'pink!'

Glue cotton balls on the cotton ponytail holders until they?re completely covered. Do the same with the shorts and bra. Allow them to dry overnight. Place the chenille stick horizontally on the piece of felt. The chenille stick should stick out at least 1 inch on both sides of the felt. Wrap the felt around it, sealing the last roll with a strip of glue. With the 1-inch of overhang from the stick, pierce through the shorts. Pull the stick through until the felt becomes flush with the shorts. Take the end of the chenille stick that is threaded through and bend it. Thread it back through the shorts. Twist the chenille stick, and add a drop of glue to secure.

Everything that is covered with cotton balls, dust with blush to give it a pink color. When getting your child dressed, put on the leggings first. Then the leotard, then the shorts, then the bra. Finally, place the cotton ball-covered ponytail holders on your child?s wrists and ankles."
