Brassiere essentials

Wednesday, December 31, 2008

We don't wear the same shoes with every outfit, so why would we wear the same bra underneath every ensemble?

Your bra wardrobe should include bras for many different occasions, from an elegant night out in your favorite backless dress to an afternoon at the park in your sheerest babydoll tee. But choosing the right intimates can be complicated.

You can liken bra shopping to the woman who seems to pick the wrong guy, again and again and again. We buy bras we're comfortable with, which can severely limit our options. Part of this is simply not knowing what's out there and what is right for your specific body type. This guide is for the woman who wants to know the difference between a full coverage bra and a demi-cup bra, and everything in between.

American Breast Care, $48 at Women’s Health Boutique
Full coverage
This type of bra is a typical, practical bra for everyday wear. Full coverage bras are either seamless or seamed, and are a must-have for your lingerie drawer. They offer maximum support and coverage, look great under your clothes and are comfortable to wear anytime.

Le Mystere demi-cup, $79 at Dillard’s
Demi-cup
Also known as a balconette bra, this contoured underwire has cups partially cut away to expose the top of the breast. This bra style almost always has wide set shoulder straps, as well. It’s a very flattering style and comes in handy when you find yourself with a low-cut or wide scoop neckline where your everyday bra would show. Most have extra padding in the cups, which allows for great cleavage.

Cassandra push-up, $29 at Dillard’s
Push-up
These bras are structured so that the breasts are lifted and placed closer together to enhance the cleavage, helping your bust line go from wee to wow! This type of bra comes in handy when an outfit calls for a more filled-out look. It is most frequently used with evening and formal attire.

Cassandra strapless, $33 at Dillard’s
Strapless
As the name implies, this bra has no straps (or comes with straps that can be easily removed). Instead, it has wide sides and a sewn-in silicone stitching to keep it in place. This style should be worn with strapless tops, evening gowns or outfits where a “regular” bra would show.
