The perfect face

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

Catherine Zeta-Jones wears it ... so does Jennifer Lopez, Katie Holmes and many other smashingly sexy stars of Hollywood. Why? Airbrush makeup creates a flawless face — almost as if you took your picture and gave it a good once-over in Photoshop.

Airbrush artistry began in the movie biz many years ago when makeup artists used the technique to paint hundreds of extras in a quick and effective way. In the 90s, the technique was re-popularized when digital photography and high-def TV demanded a flawless, yet natural look.

Recently, makeup artists specializing in airbrush cosmetics have been offering their services to clients outside of the film, TV and photographic industries. Longview resident, Joy Bell, a makeup artist who is certified in airbrush application, said that for special occasions and events, airbrush makeup is the way to go.

"It's certainly not for everyday use, but a definite plus for special occasions," she said. "You wouldn't wake up one Monday and say, 'Hmmm, I think I should get my makeup airbrushed today;' however, for special occasions like weddings, prom nights and pageants, airbrush is a must."

Joy, a former pageant girl, knows first-hand how important it is to wear long-lasting makeup on special days.

"When I started looking into the airbrush makeup business, I was searching for a product that a pageant girl wouldn't have to worry about coming off during wardrobe changes," she said. "I've been there, I know. I needed something that would last without smudging, budging or transferring onto clothes."

Her quest lead her to a silicone-based, water-resistant product the lasts up to 12 hours with no problems!

The difference

While traditional foundations and cosmetics can look obvious, "cakey" or thick, airbrush makeup leaves a light, seamless veil of color over your skin. Most clients even find the application process rather soothing,

"All you feel is cool air being blown on your face," Joy said. "Women actually enjoy this process. It takes roughly 30 minutes to do the foundation, eyes and lips ... you name it."

Airbrushing uses a small air compressor that sprays a mist of color that covers your skin, giving you a flawless-looking complexion. It looks more natural than traditional products, because it isn't rubbed into your skin — it conceals while allowing your skin to breathe.

So, for your special day, think about taking the airbrush route. As Joy said, "Is it for everyone? Yes! If you have skin, it's for you!"
