Moms & Kids: Mum's the word

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

These days, a homecoming mum can cost more than $100 and weigh as much as 10 pounds! They have become a status symbol for many junior high and high school students. Designs change every year — the more original, the better!

Friends at Ellis Pottery in Longview can lead you to an aisle exploding with bright ribbons and fun trinkets to adorn your mum this year. Mom and daughter team Kalli VanMeter Conway and Tatum Conway of Kilgore decided to try their hands at making a mum on a $30 budget. Here's what they did:

"It wasn't hard to make a cute mum on a $30 budget! The items we purchased at Ellis Pottery were a premade backing and a mum flower, along with trinkets such as a football, star, megaphone, bells, football helmet, ribbon, three glitter-covered stars and silver curling ribbon. We armed ourselves with a hot glue gun and stapler and went to work!

Tatum tied the trinkets to strips of the silver curling ribbon and attached them and other ribbons to the premade backing. Then, she hot glued the mum to the backing. Finally, she hot glued the loose trinkets and glitter-covered stars to the mum flower.

The entire process took approximately 35 minutes. She thoroughly enjoyed it and felt a great sense of pride when it was finished. This is a great way for moms and daughters to spend quality time together as well as save money."
