A healthy approach to healing

Wednesday, August 26, 2009

We wash our hair and take showers. We brush our teeth and tediously manicure our fingernails. But what do we do to help maintain our essential organs and cells inside our bodies?

Between the stress of our day-to-day duties, toxicity in the environment, unwholesome foods in our pantries and inadequate nutrition habits, it seems as though we are forced to lead unhealthy lifestyles.

While there's no magic bullet for weight loss and immediate well-being, the team at Dr. David Adams' Family Focus Wellness Center in Longview may have what you need to get your health back on track. Their patients report they have more energy, are healthier, and have less desire for those unhealthy foods.

"People anxious for weight loss will take a crack at any diet, take any pill and even resort to surgery to try to get their weight under control," said Lisa Mull of Longview. "Trust me: I was a professional yo-yo dieter and sugar addict. But all that changed when I met Dr. David Adams at the Wellness Center and jumped onboard with nutritional cleansing."

What is it?

Nutritional cleansing is a terrific route to help our bodies deal with toxicity.

"By eating healthy meals, primarily of whole foods, and by drinking regular supplements to flush the toxins from our systems, our bodies will reset their natural balance, and weight loss and body health will automatically follow," Lisa said.

Think about it like this: Nutritional cleansing is like changing the oil in our car. As good, responsible motorists, we go for oil changes every three months or every 3,000 miles because the oil gets yucky and clogged with pollutants. Once the dirty oil is replaced with good, clean oil, our vehicles "Vroom!" more efficiently. The same can be said for our bodies: We are exposed to pollutants in our environment, impurities in our diets and stress that is often created by our hectic lifestyles. Nutritional cleansing helps the body and organs do what they are designed to do naturally by removing impurities.

"In our wellness practice, we treat the three causes of all health concerns," Lisa said. "By treating the root causes of health problems and tracking progress, maximum health potential is realized, which improves not only quality of life, but also quality of relationships."

The causes

* Physical traumas. We all have had accidents or falls in the past that can injure muscles and damage nerves. Dr. Adams specializes in chiropractic care, which realigns the body taking pressure off the nerves and restoring normal function.

* Hormone imbalances. Prolonged stress leads to hormone imbalances related to the adrenal glands. These little organs that sit on top of your kidneys regulate many processes in the body via the release of hormones that control weight, digestion, sleep, allergies, heart function, fatigue, etc. Dr. Adams addresses malfunctioning adrenal glands through improved nutrition and supplementation.

* Toxicity factors. We?re exposed to 80,000 chemicals a week in our foods, water and air. To defend against them, your body surrounds them in fat. Through nutritional cleansing, stored toxins are rapidly reduced, excess weight is lost and energy is restored.

Dr. Adams and his staff work together to formulate the program that best suits each patient.

"As a nurse, I?ve never experienced a more rewarding feeling than we experience every day in our practice. I witness people?s health and quality of life restored! When you see patients having to go back to their medical doctors to have medication dosages adjusted DOWN because their health is improving, that?s exciting — that?s health care!" Lisa said. "Our bodies are wonderfully made, and if we take care of our bodies by properly nourishing, moving and maintaining them, our bodies will perform optimally."

Don't be overfed and undernourished

One day in the not-so-distant past, a slightly overweight Kris Jacobson was struggling with her grocery bags. She had just returned from the store, and was balancing heavy sacks on both arms.

"As I struggled with the weight of the bags on my arms, a light bulb went off in my head," said this Longview resident. "I had so much weight on me. Then I thought, 'You carry around all this extra baggage every single day that makes you tired and worn out. Just like you need to drop these grocery sacks from your arms, you need to get rid of that weight."

With that light bulb moment, she turned her attention to getting healthy. While strolling the aisles of LeTourneau University's yearly health fair in March 2009, she came across Family Focus Wellness Center's booth and signed up for the program.

Kris is not only 25 pounds thinner, but also happier, healthier and full of energy.

"Americans are overfed and undernourished," she said. "When we go out to eat, we get huge portions of food, but we have to ask ourselves: How much nutritional value is on this plate in front of me? In sticking with this program, I've learned good foods from bad foods. I said 'bye' to potato chips and sodas, and am happier because of it. This program helped me change my habits, which in turn changed my life,"
