GREGG DU BANQUET: T. J. Shafer will serve as area chairman for the 44th Annual Gregg County Ducks Unlimited Banquet, scheduled for 6 tonight at Longview’s Maude Cobb Activity and Convention Center.
Tickets to the banquet are available from any Gregg County DU committee member and cost $25 for a youth ticket, $40 for a single ticket and $70 for a couple’s ticket. Each ticket includes admission to the event, the catered meal, and a year’s membership in DU.
Ticket prices increase by $10 on the night of the event.
This year’s event features several special DU items. The 2013 DU Gun-of-the-Year is a Fausti 12-gauge over/under shotgun, with interchangeable choke tubes, a select grade walnut stock/forearm, and special DU engraving and gold inlay.
Besides the Fausti shotgun, the Gregg Co. banquet features the DU Handgun-of-the-Year, a Para USA Elite Commander 1911 semiautomatic pistol.
Wildlife art is always a big part of DU events, and this year’s banquet is no exception. The 2013 Print of the Year is “Pitching into Cypress” by David Maass. This print features a flock of mallards descending to flooded timber.
The 2013 Gregg County DU banquet will include both live and silent auctions, several games and expanded raffle opportunities including a tiered raffle structure.
Youths (17 and under) can participate in the DU Greenwing Program. At the banquet, this program will include several special youth-only games and raffles as well as informational activities on DU’s conservation work.

HATCHERY HALLOWEEN: ATHENS — Halloween at the Hatchery takes place at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) Oct. 24, and local businesses and organizations are invited to take part.
TFFC offers three ways to take part in this annual community service event that benefits local charitable organizations. A business or organization may sponsor the event by making a cash contribution to defray the costs of decorations and publicity. Another way to be involved is to give away candy to the children who will attend.
If you are really into the Halloween spirit, consider taking on responsibility for decorating an area at TFFC for the event. Areas will be judged during the event and prizes awarded.
The event will run from 6-8:30 p.m. Organizations giving away candy are expected to provide enough candy for 3,000 children. There is no charge for booths at the event.
Halloween at the Hatchery is a Friends of TFFC event.
