Name: Jack Goodwyn
I volunteer for: Longview Community Ministries' Meals on Wheels.
|
In addition to the Longview Community Ministries? Meals on Wheels program, Jack Goodwyn remains a volunteer with the GLOBE program, an education initiative he helped found in Longview but has evolved into a program used across the country. |
I also volunteer for: Greater Longview Organization for Business and Education. The program has now been adopted statewide and is called Texas Scholars. The program encourages students to take a more rigorous course of study in high school to prepare them for the workforce and higher education. I am very proud that this was started in Longview.
I also volunteer at my church, First Baptist Church of Longview.
I volunteer because: I can look at the situation my family and I enjoy and realize we are very fortunate to have what we have. Not just the things we have — but our health, good friends, family. I look around and can see that many people who don't have what we do.
My family members are: My wife, Ella, who is a retired teacher and also volunteers. We have three grown children.
I volunteer at Meals on Wheels because: I specifically volunteer for Meals on Wheels at Longview Community Ministry because it is a program that reaches out to people who don't or can't get out very much. We might be the only person they see that day or even that week. They are grateful for the meal, of course, but they are so grateful to have someone come in and check on them, too. It's a person-to-person service.
