A&M Club awards scholarships

The Deep East Texas A&M Club awarded eight scholarships worth $11,000 total to local high school seniors who will attend Texas A&M University during the 2008-09 school year. Three, $2,000 Jim Cockrell Memorial Scholarships were awarded to Jordan Lynn Black of Gladewater High School; Kevin Scott Stacy of Hallsville High School and Sara Jean Veralli of Spring Hill High School. The club also awarded $1,000 scholarships to Blake Kent Bledsoe of Longview High School, Ryan Nathaniel Fountain of Longview High School; Dana Elizabeth Monholland of Longview High School and Ashley Ann Williams of Hallsville High School. The $1,000 Dr. Peggy Coghlan scholarship was awarded to Kaleigh H. Todd of Gladewater High School.

Karp Piano Festival

Area students earned several honors at the 16th annual David Karp Piano Festival competition at Kilgore College's Van Cliburn Auditorium in April. More than 100 Texas students from elementary to high school age competed.

John McConnell of Kilgore and Adrian Guerrero of Pittsburg tied for third place in Division II. Kristine Uy-oco of Henderson won first place in Division III. Nick Siler and William Mann, both of Henderson, won first place in Division IV-Duets, and Reid Stone of Overton and Mahlon Acres of Henderson won second place in that division.

Trinity School earns books

Trinity School of Texas libraries are two of 3,000 libraries across the country selected by the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association to receive free hardcover editions of 17 classic books from the We the People bookshelf. The award is part of the endowment's We the People initiative, which supports projects that strengthen the teaching, study and understanding of American history and culture. The theme of this year's bookshelf is "Created Equal." Some of the books included in the award are "Give Me Liberty! The Story of the Declaration of Independence" and "Freedom Walkers: The Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott" by Russell Freedman, "The Gettysburg Address" by Abraham Lincoln and "Breaking Through" by Francisco Jimenez.

LISD students among top talent

Thirteen Longview Independent School District students qualified for 2008 State Recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program as. The program identifies and supports academically talented students in a 16-state talent search. Students identified to participate in the program complete the SAT Reasoning Test or the ACT Assessment college entrance examination. The seventh-grade Longview school district students are Kaitlyn Charles, Alex Clark, Aaron Conrad, Cameron Coolidge, Colin Jeter, Jonah Kral, Curtis Mann, William Northcutt, Andrew O'Connor, Allessia Scribner, Nolan Stowe, Christopher Yu and Jonthan Yuen.

Westlake awards scholarships

Westlake Chemical Corp. has selected three students of Longview employees for scholarships for the fall term. The students from Longview High School are Blake Bledsoe, Grace Henderson and Charles Moore. Scholarships are renewable for up to four years of undergraduate study provided the student maintains specific high academic standards.

PT Choir presents show

The Pine Tree school choirs will present a pop concert at 7 p.m. May 16 at the Pine Tree High School Little Theater. Students from seventh grade through 12th grade will present "You can't stop the beat!! Pop Show 2008." Tickets are $5 and can be purchased at the door.

Scholarships available

The Longview Knights of Columbus, Council No. 11093 of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Council No. 2771 of St. Anthony's Catholic Church, are accepting applications for two $500 scholarships. June 2008 Catholic graduating high school seniors who are members of the Longview-area Catholic community are eligible to apply.

Applications are available in the church offices of St. Mary's, St. Matthew, Our Lady of Grace and St. Anthony's Catholic churches or online at www.stmaryslgv.org.

SAT course set

An SAT Tactical Strategies course is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. June 3 through 5 at Longview High School. Cost is $45. The course is designed to teach students strategies for taking the test, including when to guess, when not to guess, and how to pace yourself to maximize your score. The cost for the course does not include registration for the SAT. Learn the proven strategies that can raise your SAT scores. The registration deadline is May 27.
