A closed meeting discussion by Longview Independent School District trustees about its 1970 federal desegregation order yielded no vote on Monday.
Superintendent James Wilcox said Aug. 22 that he would likely ask trustees to consider hiring a law firm to begin efforts to get the district out from under the federal ruling, which requires Longview to draw attendance zones and bus students across its districts to ensure its elementary and middle schools reflect the racial make-up of the community.ssIn spite of the order, the district has allowed parents to choose campuses for their children for several years. But the U.S. Department of Justice ordered the district in July to stop the practice because it had allowed some campuses to have higher-than-allowed numbers of some sub-populations. The district has been ordered to reject all future transfer requests that do not support racial integration.
Wilcox did not comment about the meeting, citing attorney-client privilege.
