Early morning chase leads to White Oak man's arrest

FROM STAFF REPORTS

Tuesday, November 03, 2009

A White Oak man remained jailed Monday after authorities said he led police on chase while driving drunk.

Jerry Mason Hays, 47, was booked into the Gregg County Jail shortly after 6 a.m. Monday. Bond was set at $50,000 on charges of felony driving while intoxicated and evading arrest and detention in a vehicle.

Longview police responded to the Whataburger at 105 N. Spur 63 at about 6 a.m. Monday and discovered Hays asleep in the driver's seat of a vehicle, according to arrest reports. When police smelled alcohol on his breath and asked him to step out of the vehicle, Hays drove away, reports showed.

A chase ensued for several miles until police used spikes to blow out Hays' tires.

Hays has at least two prior drunken driving convictions, authorities said.
