LUFKIN — A 10-year-old girl trying to walk from her house on Sayers Street to Brandon Elementary, across the street, was struck by a car Wednesday morning.
Lufkin schools Superintendent Roy Knight said the third-grade girl apparently "darted out" into the street and was struck by a vehicle in the school zone in front of the campus. The girl had a knot on her head and was taken to the hospital. Knight said at midday Wednesday that the girl appeared to have suffered some hairline fractures in her skull and was being taken to Texas Children's Hospital in Houston to see a pediatric neurologist for observation.
"It's purely precautionary," Knight said. "We expect her back at school in a few days."
The girl was able to walk back to her home after the accident, according to a press release from Lufkin Police spokesman Lt. David Young. He said the girl suffered "non-life-threatening injuries."
"According to officers at the scene, it appears the girl let one vehicle pass but failed to see a second vehicle behind that one and ran out into the road in front of that second vehicle," Young said. "No charges have been filed regarding the accident."
The driver of the car that hit the girl was not injured.
Several school officials were on the scene after the accident, which happened shortly before 8 a.m. Wednesday. Some were counseling the girl's mother at the home. Knight said the mom was in the family's front yard when the accident occurred.
Brandon Elementary has a large section of land in front of its main building, so most students are dropped off at the school by car or bus. No crossing guards are posted in front of the school, but there is a manned crosswalk on Kurth Drive near the campus.
