Greater Longview USBC trio outlasts field to earn mixed state titles

Sunday, November 15, 2009

Jenny Bostock, Matt Friend, and Troy Morgan had to endure three weekends of competition spanning four long weeks before the final curtain fell on the 27th Annual Texas State USBC Mixed Tournament last weekend.

Once the set was cleared and performances rated, the threesome found themselves on top of the final leader boards in Singles and All Events.

Bostock carded the women's only 800 series (816) to claim top prize in Women's Singles (166 average & up), and it propelled her to a 6th place finish in the same division of Women's All Events with a 2,127 total.

In Men's All Events (176 to 195 average), Friend earned the championship with a 2,248 total. He missed the Men's Singles top spot by a mere 10 pins with a 799 series.

Morgan won the Men's All Events (175 average & under) title with his 2,290 total, while his 799 series moved him into a 3-way tie for 6th place in Men's Singles (same division).

Newly crowned Regional PBA Tour champ Andy Patterson needed only 8 pins total handicap added to his 813 scratch series to finish 2nd in Men's Singles (196 average & up).

Unofficial final standings are located in the "Scoreboard" section below.

YABA deadline

Entries into the annual GLUSBC Youth City Championship close Wednesday, with the two-day event set for Nov. 21-22 at Oil Bowl.

The Team event takes center stage on Saturday with an 11 a.m. squad, while Sunday's squad at noon features Doubles and Singles competitions.

Entry fee for all divisions except Pee Wee is $10 per bowler for each event, while the Pee Wees pay $6 per bowler.

Entry forms are available at area bowling centers.

Duke Cheetah 'King'

Norm Duke added another milestone to his PBA Hall of Fame career by capturing the Cheetah Championship for his 33rd career title. The veteran pro, who now ranks 5th on the list of PBA all-time title winners, ended an incredible run by challenger Ryan Ciminelli to win their best-of-seven-game championship match, 4-1.

The finals of the PBA World Series of Bowling event, presented in a unique documentary-style format narrated by ESPN's Kenny Mayne, gave viewers an inside look at a PBA match play event.

The 23-year-old Ciminelli, a non-exempt player seeking his first Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour title defeated Hall of Famer Brian Voss, four-time Tour champion Ryan Shafer and PBA Tour rookie Derek Sapp to advance to the title match.

Against the 45-year-old Duke, Ciminelli won the first game, but the wily veteran then took control, sweeping the next four matches.

As the first so-called "animal pattern" winner of the season, Duke earned a berth in the end-of-season PBA Experience Showdown presented by BOWL.COM in addition to $25,000 in "victory money.'' The April 2010 tourney will be held at the new USBC International Training and Research Center in Arlington.

Dual championships

ESPN is set to broadcast both the PBA Men's and Women's Viper Championships at noon today, with each winner earning a berth in the April 2010 PBA Showdown.

Steve Jaros takes aim at his 8th PBA Tour title as he takes on Rhino Page, who has two titles under his belt. Last week's runner-up Ryan Ciminelli goes up against Mike Haugen, Jr., who is seeking his 3rd PBA Tour title. Winners of the two semi-final matches meet for the Championship with $25,000 on the line.

In the Women's title match, Lynda Barnes of Double Oak plans to bring her "A Game" against Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y. The new champion will pocket $10,000 for her efforts. Both standouts are aiming for their first PBA Women's Series titles in the 2nd event of the 2009-10 season.

Splits galore

National Mixed "hot shot" David Hazel has been on a roll recently, and not even the "Big 4" could get in his way. Hazel converted the difficult 4-6-7-10 split Wednesday night on his way to a sterling 270 game and 724 series.

Members of the Monday Night Seniors picked up a variety of splits, including Sue Waits (3-7-10), Vern Anthony (5-10), Beverly Small (4-5-7), Billy Stevens and Mary Theis (3-10).

Bluebonnet bowler Annabelle Cain made short work of the pesky 2-7 split in last week's league play.

Splits of every shape and size were no match for the Wednesday Seniors, as these members can attest: John Stineman (6-7-10 and 4-5-7), Billy Rogers (4-7-10), Jimmy Caddenhead (5-7 and 5-6-10), Ron Waits (5-10), John Grinnell (4-5-7 and 3-10), Paul Fortier (3-10 twice), Bernice Mitchell, Wanda Anderson, and Truman DeLoach (3-10), Sam Price (4-5), and Robert Elmore (2-7).
