Business Beat: New housing development moving forward

Sunday, February 17, 2008

Mac Fuller's Fairmont Cove subdivision on the south side of Fairmont Street and west of the intersection of H.G. Moseley Boulevard will be among items up for consideration at this week's Longview Planning and Zoning Commission meeting.

Fuller, a 1975 graduate of Longview High School, has been in the real estate and development business in the Dallas area most of his working life. He is bringing some of that expertise back to his hometown with Fairmont Cove.

A big change in his original plans for the 28 lots at Cove Place is the development would be a gated community. Fuller said that was in response to demands in the local market.

Framing on the first three homes in the Pine Tree-area development is scheduled to begin Monday. Fuller said one of those will be the model home Coldwell Banker Lenhart Properties agents will use to market Pine Cove.

The other two homes are being built on a speculative basis, he said. Fuller bought the 6.6-acre tract early last year.

opens dealership

Rick Johnston Used Cars, named after its owner, Rick Johnston, has opened at 716 W. Marshall Ave.

Johnston has several years experience in the automotive business, including serving as the general manager at Durham Chevrolet for more than 20 years. He is the father of five children, including three sons who are in the car business.

The phone number for his new business is (903) 230-0456.

Inbound call reps needed

Another 400 jobs could be added to the local economy in coming weeks as the Longview offices of Sitel, in Triple Creek Center off Judson Road, ramps up to meet the demands of a new contract, Mike McCart, site director announced late last week.

He said if the company is able to find 500 or 600 new workers it could put them to work. The jobs are being created through a new contract the company inked with a large national cellular telephone company, McCart said.

Starting pay is $9.25 an hour with shifts available from 6 a.m to 1 a.m. starting March 1, he said.

Hooters plans

don't include Longview

Longview-area fans of the Hooters restaurant chain who have heard that a Hooters restaurant may be coming to town could be in for disappointment, according to Crystal Foster.

She's the executive administrator for Hooters Texas Wings, which has franchise rights for this area. Responding to a request for information on whether Hooters was considering Longview, Foster said nothing is in the works..

"Currently, we do not have plans to build in this area (Longview)," Foster said. "However, we are always looking for growth possibility."

The company says it has no franchise opportunities available in the United States but does have them in some foreign countries, including Poland, Bulgaria, Iceland and Russia.

Among the stipulations for prospective franchiseesis having liquid assets of at least $2 million.
