Jim Bowling was sworn in as interim Upshur County judge Monday morning after being unanimously named by commissioners on Friday, County Court Administrator Kristin Culberson said.
Bowling, 71, who lives in the Pritchett area, will be filling the post while County Judge Dean Fowler is suspended, pending the outcome of a trial.
Fowler, along with Sheriff Anthony Betterton and Commissioner Lloyd Crabtree, faces charges of official oppression and abuse of official capacity after a man was removed from a Commissioners Court meeting this past year when he repeatedly wore duct tape over his mouth to protest that public comment had been removed from meeting agendas.
Bowling is a retired university professor and dean of the Mississippi State University School of Business, as well as a former flight standards inspector for the Federal Aviation Administration and middle manager of a Fortune 100 corporation.
