It was supposed to be fun vacation for a Quitman family but last Wednesday, June 28, strong currents off the coast of Alabama swept away joy and ended a vacation in tragedy.
Quitman attorney Mark Breding and his wife Carrie along with their three children were enjoying a day at the beach in Foley, Alabama. The 29-year-old mother and two of the children were reportedly wading in the water, sources told the Democrat. They began to go out too far and came too a drop-off when they suddenly got caught up in a rip current.
Sources said Carrie swam to keep the two children above water while her step-daughter swam out to retrieve the children, when quickly Carrie slipped under water. One local man assisted the daughter in rescuing the children while another man helped Mark rescue his wife.
Sources told the Democrat Carrie was under water between 7-10 minutes before being pulled to shore and administered CPR.
She was reportedly taken to a nearby hospital where she was listed in critical condition and put on life support. Carrie died Friday night.
Funeral services have been scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday, July 5 at Lowe Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held at the Quitman City Cemetery.
Visitation will be held prior to the services beginning at 1 p.m.
