GLADEWATER - A Gladewater man has been charged with intoxication assault and fleeing the scene of an accident after a Saturday wreck sent him and another person to a hospital with injuries, damaged new vehicles at McKaig Chevrolet and a fence at a local church.
Trent Sasser and his passenger, Lauren Phillips, were taken to Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview with undetermined injuries following the wreck, Gladewater Police Chief Farrell Alexander said Sunday.
The investigation remains ongoing, but there is evidence of alcohol and drug use, Alexander said.
Sasser was driving Saturday evening in the 600 block of South Loop 485 when he hit a 2012 gold Toyota Camry driven by Zuleyma Ventura, Alexander said.
Sasser drove away from the wreck at "a very high rate of speed before losing control of his vehicle and leaving the roadway," Alexander said.
Sasser's truck traveled 265 feet before hitting a fence at Memorial Baptist Church and driving into the new vehicle inventory at McKaig Chevrolet, Alexander said. At least seven new inventory pickups were "heavily damaged" because of the wreck, he said.
Police were dispatched to McKaig Chevrolet regarding the wreck, and found Sasser and Phillips in Sasser's silver 2012 Dodge pickup.
At this time, there is no estimate regarding the total amount of damages to the new inventory pickups and other property, Alexander said.
