GILMER--A meeting for Upshur County residents interested in becoming American Red Cross volunteers is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, April 5th at the Gilmer Fire Department.
The Red Cross is coordinating with County Fire Marshal Paul Steelman on "scheduling meetings in various locations, and inviting individuals and organizations that would like to work with us to attend," said a news release from Darrell Riley, East Area 3 Field Specialist for the American Red Cross North Texas Region.
The Red Cross began "a large reorganization" in September 2011, moving "from a group of individual chapters to a corporate type organizational structure which will allow us to better serve those in need when disasters occur," Riley said. "We are currently rebuilding our volunteer base, renewing old relationships and establishing new ones."
He said the gathering is scheduled to last 1 1/2 hours, "will be a short, casual meeting in which we talk a little about who we are, how we serve the community, how you can serve the community through us, and appeal for volunteers and partners in the area.
"Expanding our volunteer base in each community allows us to have local individuals who can respond quickly to disaster situations in various ways," Riley said.
