Gilmer: Yulefest celebration set to begin

GILMER - Santa Claus is coming to town Thursday as Gilmer kicks off its annual Yulefest celebration.

Yulefest is Upshur County's annual holiday festival, and it starts Thursday with a 6 p.m. parade in downtown Gilmer.

Parade floats being judged must line up at 5 p.m. on Titus Street behind Gilmer National Bank.

Following the parade, Santa will take his place on the courthouse square. Children can visit after the parade; 1 to 3 p.m. Dec. 1; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8, 15, 21, and 22.

Art contest entries are due by Wednesday. Children in pre-kindergarten through third grade can pick up a picture to color from the Gilmer Area Chamber of Commerce, 106 Buffalo St. Children in fourth through sixth grades should submit an original drawing by Wednesday.

Gingerbread house contestants should submit their house to Gilmer Drug, 112 Davis St., between 3 and 5 p.m. Friday. The contest features two age division - children 12 and under, and adults ages 13 and older. Entry fee is $2.

Contest winner's submissions will be on display Dec. 1 at Gilmer Drug.

Also, at 7:30 a.m. Dec. 1 is a reindeer run starting at Gilmer High School, Buffalo and Bradford streets. Entry fee is $25.

A breakfast with Santa will be 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Dec. 1 at the Gilmer High School cafeteria. Cost is $2.50 for children ages 3-11 and $3.50 for children ages 12 and up.
