Welcome back, Downtown Live! We're happy to see you again.
Downtown Live!, the Friday evening concert series that achieved great success with its premiere run this past spring at Heritage Plaza, tonight is kicking off its fall season of four shows. It's free, the weather promises to be beautiful, and we can't imagine why anyone would intentionally miss the great event. You can hear local music, shop the wares of area vendors and, most importantly, mingle with neighbors.
With a Downtown Market opening at 4 p.m. and live music beginning at 5 p.m., this past spring's events drew several hundred people each Friday to the multi-generational outings.
We saw children having a ball coloring with chalk on the vast canvas of the plaza's pavement, adults chatting while sipping beer and wine, and couples dancing.
Most importantly, we saw our neighbors coming together in a downtown that increasingly feels like Longview's front porch, or its living room. Downtown truly is the heart of our great city, and events like Downtown Live! are an important part in the continuing rebirth of the historic central business district.
Once again, we applaud the One Hundred Acres of Heritage Main Street Advisory Board, Longview Chamber of Commerce, city of Longview, the sponsors and others who have worked to bring us this great series.
The News-Journal's weekly @play entertainment section is the sole print sponsor for Downtown Live!, and you'll find plenty of copies of the publication and other giveaways under the @play banner at the plaza. Inside this week's edition of @play, you can find the four-week schedule and meet Westbound 21, the band we'll be enjoying tonight.
So, come on downtown and join your neighbors in what we like to think of as as our city's collective sigh of relaxation at the end of the workweek.
See you tonight.
